Constant Career Planning Part Two In a previous post, I wrote about author Rita McGrathâs theory of the âtransient advantage,â the idea that if you are constantly thinking about whatâs next, youâll be more successful. Everyone should have a reactive and proactive strategy for your next career move. McGrath provides a great quiz to determine if you are ready for whatever comes next. Her questions provide a pretty good template for a proactive career plan. Here are some ideas to make you more nimble in the face of change (all based on her quiz.) Iâve learned a meaningful new skill that I didnât have before in the last two years, whether it is work related or not. Learning is perhaps the most important skill you can have because it allows you to be more resilient in the face of change. Although I would argue that work-related skills would be the stronger choice, any new mastery gives you confidence and builds your brainâs capacity. Here are some skills in which I think everyone should become competent to be really successful (listed from least to most challenging): Setting up strong profiles on social networks Installing new software on your PC or Mac Setting up a secure home network Being conversant in a foreign language Coding / programming I could name, off the top of my head, at least ten people who would be good leads for new opportunities. Having a strong network means knowing people who can help you with advice and leads. That takes work. You probably have a network of social contacts â" friends with who you have things in common and have fun. As youâre budgeting social time, add in time to meet with colleagues in your industry or respected people outside your industry to learn about whatâs happening. Be sure to offer your assistance and advice when you can â" givers are the among most successful people in any community. I have enough resources (savings or other) that I could take the time to retrain, work for a smaller salary, or volunteer in order to get access to a new opportunity. Financial experts recommend having six months of living expenses in savings available in case the worst happens. For the record, I donât know many people who have this kind of discipline; some of those who did found themselves wiped out during the Great Recession. But now is the time to review your budget and create a savings plan. Iâve spoken to numerous people who have started new ventures or re-invented their lives to be able to accept interesting work that paid less. They all agreed that having money in the bank took away much of their stress during the transition. I can make income from a variety of activities, not just my salary. I have written before about the advantage of having a sideline: something that you control and that allows you to bring in income outside of your employerâs wages. When things are tight, youâll have a resource for more income. It will also help you afford the vacations or big purchases you dream about. Whether you start an actual business venture or turn a hobby into spare cash, itâs a smart move that will improve your liquidity and give you confidence. Whatâs your proactive career plan?

Youâve heard the question, âWhat would Jesus do?â as a way to guide behavior. You can use a similar approach to help you make the decisions that will move you toward your goal. Start by defining what people are like whoâve met the goal you want to achieve. How do they behave? What choices do they make? What do they focus on? etc. Once you have a good ideas of that person, as you work toward your goal, use it as a guide to making decisions and helping you stay the course. 5) Get a buddy. Thereâs a reason that mentors and mastermind groups are so popular. Itâs easier to achieve things when you have others who can answer questions, give feedback and cheer you on. Thereâs no rule that says you have to work on your goals buy yourself. So find someone willing to take the journey with you. Youâll be more accountable and have more fun!

Remember that the reason you are in an interview is that the employer has a need that you can hopefully be the solution to. Before you agree to join a company, you want to be sure that the people you will be working with will be helping you out, transferring knowledge and making sure you progress in your role. The most important person will obviously be your new manager. Picking your new boss is similar to choosing long term friends or even your partner â" the difference being that you are likely to spend more waking time with your new boss. Make sure you get the selection right by going through this checklist before you decide if your potential new boss is right for you: 1. Chemistry You will know straight away if you have the right chemistry with your manager-to-be. Sense of humor, body language, common interest and rapport in general will determine how you get along. Once you have left the interview, youâll have that gut feeling. Be honest with yourself; can you see yourself working with this person for the next three to five years? If the answer is no, run to the hills. 2. Background Make sure you ask your future manager how they ended up in their role. Was it by choice or necessity? How long have they been with the company? Has it turned out the way they expected? What would they change if they could? This will help you draw up a picture of what things will be like for you. 3. Style of management Is your potential new boss a sugar coater or more of a boot camp drill instructor? Ask them to describe themselves as a manger and what their priorities are. Watch out for David Brent style corporate buzzwords and clichés. Another vital clue is how much they like to get involved in their subordinatesâ day to day work. Some people hate being micro managed, others thrive on it. Whatever you prefer, itâs important you are both on the same wavelength. 4. Can you learn from them Just like they say you should work to learn, your boss should be your teacher. If you can see yourself learning from this person right now and for the next years, you are probably on to a winner. The question to ask yourself here is whether they possess skills that you want to acquire and do they seem happy to share these with you? 5. Whom do they report to Insist on meeting the boss of the boss. You need to understand what type of manager they report to as this will trickle down to your situation as well. If possible, ask to see the top dog separately so that you can ask a few probing questions around your potential new manager. 6. Problem handling There is nothing better than a bit of pressure to see someoneâs real character come out. Whether itâs a conflict in their team or an IT crash, how did they handle it? Ask for a specific example. This will give you an idea of how they would deal with you in case you lock horns in the future. They say a clever employee knows how to manage their manager, and the only way to do this is knowing how they are likely to react in a particular situation. 7. Company outlook Ask the manager what major obstacles they foresee for the company, what their plan is to overcome these. This will show you how clued up they are on matters outside their department and what preparations they have in store. 8. Where are they heading Try to understand what the goals are for the boss. Is he or she going places or staying put for the foreseeable future? You need to know this as you might want to move up the ladder one day. The flipside would be that you could end up being managed by a complete stranger overnight.
